Floating tenon joinery using the Festool® Domino® has vastly expanded the capabilities of both professional and hobbyist woodworkers around the world. While the Domino has several built-in mortise positioning features, most woodworkers find that these existing positions do not fit the broad applications of the tool. The built-in guide pins (or dogs, depending on the age of your Domino) are very effective, but they can’t be changed from the 37mm position. The Cross Stops are adjustable, but the closest they can be positioned to the cutter is 100mm. The trim stop can be used for mortising the end of a board, but it cannot be set up for right-hand and left-hand alignment.
The Multi-position Guide Stop (MGS-20) combines all the versatility of these accessories, and more, into one single attachment. The guide stops can be positioned anywhere you need them, ranging from 3/8" (9mm) up to 2-5/8" (67mm). This means you can position a tenon in the center of a workpiece from 3/4" (19mm) wide to 5-1/4" (133mm) wide.
But unlike other accessories, you are not limited to using just one position at a time. The MGS-20 comes equipped with two pair of position stops, and you can add as many more as you need, up to a total of 6 pair of position stops. When you use one position stop, you don’t need to remove or alter the unused position stops. Instead, you simply flip them back, out of the way. This means that you can dedicate position stops for specific dimensions that you commonly use, or move them around for different projects.
The uses of the MGS-20 are limited only by your imagination. If you are a cabinetmaker, you can have position stops set up for each of the common faceframe sizes you use. If you build a lot of drawer boxes, you can have position stops for each of your drawer heights. An even greater benefit is that you can set up the position stops to automatically offset the mortise positions for drawer sides that are taller or shorter than the fronts and backs. Many professional woodworkers make their drawer boxes with sides that are slightly taller than than the front/rear componentsâ€"the MGS-20 can accommodate this.
The MGS-20 quickly attaches to your Domino joiner using two captive thumbscrews to the existing threaded holes in the Domino base, so you don’t need to alter your Domino to use it. The MGS-20 includes two adjustable centering plates that ensure exact positioning every time you install it on your Domino.
The MGS-20 ships as shown above (Domino joiner not included), with two pair of guide stops (the outer pair of guide stops include adjustment/spacing screws) and two stainless steel captive thumbscrews for mounting to your Domino joiner.
